workstation arms

by Dr Andrew Spanner, Walkerville Vet, SA

It’s important to keep accurate files and record them contemporaneously throughout a consultation but I didn’t want to keep turning away to use the computer. I wanted to remain facing the client throughout the whole procedure. The B&D workstation arms successfully solved the problem.

What’s good about it

I searched everywhere for a solution but couldn’t find another vet who had this kind of set-up. I looked at new builds around the world but still couldn’t find anything suitable. Then I found these arms that are manufactured by an Italian company for medical applications. There is an AV component to them so I contacted Adam Hackett at Onsite Audio Visual and he imported them for me. He developed a relationship with the manufacturer and is now the Australian supplier of B&D workstations arms.

The arms can move up and down, and right and left while the monitor can be positioned to suit the user. Each arm has about a two-metre reach. I use it with a wireless keyboard so the monitor can be moved completely out of the way if needed.

An unexpected advantage is that I now keep much more accurate histories and notes. There’s no need to rely on memory; I write down all the facts immediately. I can also swing the monitor around and show clients lab results or X-rays.

The arm works fantastically well but you need the right workstation on the end of it, preferably with a touch screen. These arms have made our record keeping more accurate while bringing us closer to our clients, facing them throughout the entire consultation.

What’s not so good

Each arm needs to be positioned accurately so it’s not a workplace hazard. When dealing with a struggling dog, for safety, I push it up higher than my head so it’s completely out of the way.
