Vocalist with the band Deathbeds, Kit Samin, VN of Canberra Veterinary Emergency Services in Gungahlin, ACT, loves everything about metalcore.
“When I joined the metalcore band Deathbeds in 2018, I was playing electric piano and providing clean vocals to back up David, who was more of a screaming vocalist. We’ve progressed since then, dropped the piano and I share vocals more equally with David.
“We play pretty regularly and just finished a weekend tour playing Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra. The first two shows were amazing but unfortunately, our drummer was hospitalised before the Canberra show and we had no choice but to cancel.
“Deathbeds has six members and we all get on. We write our own songs and everyone pitches in ideas. There are few arguments—we’re all reasonable people. We’ve recorded many songs that can be found on Spotify and have a YouTube channel with our music videos. Anthony, our lead guitarist, writes most of the songs then sends them to us for feedback. Once we’ve finessed a song and we’re all happy, we’ll write the lyrics and start rehearsing it.
“As much as I like songwriting and recording, I love playing live even though I still get nervous before a gig. There’s nothing better, however, than getting off stage after a show with my friends telling me how much they enjoyed it. When I’m feeling nervous, I try to remember that feeling.
“We describe ourselves as metalcore but we’re a mix between metalcore, symphonic metal and a bit of deathcore. The audience usually moshes, particularly when we play Night in Hell. We played a Halloween show that was pretty crazy and recorded a music video at the same time for a song called Dead Name. It shows what our gigs are like.
“Deathbeds has had a few line-up changes over the years. There were a few different issues, a bit of a band drama and some members came and went. It happens to all bands. The past few years have been the most solid line-up we’ve ever had.
“The metal community is an amazing place. Fans are passionate about the music and performers put so much emotion into a song that they’re literally screaming into a microphone. There aren’t many other genres of music that have so much energy. I’m very passionate about Deathbeds. After I joined in 2018, we released an album then COVID hit. We had to cancel an entire tour but we stuck together. This isn’t a passing fancy for me; I’m in it for the long haul. I love it.”
