This month, the NSW Wildlife Council—the peak body for wildlife rescuers, carers, facilities, and wildlife hospitals across NSW—is launching ‘Wildlife Friendly Roads’, a statewide campaign to reduce wildlife collisions and promote safer driving.
This initiative offers driver safety tips, engaging youth education materials, and special awareness efforts during school holidays—a peak time for road travel and wildlife vehicle-wildlife collisions.
To foster a lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation, the NWC is also rolling out fun, interactive educational materials at caravan parks, cafes, community groups, and local libraries.
Each year, over 50,000 native animals—including kangaroos, wombats, and koalas—are rescued on NSW roads, with incidents rising 30 per cent in recent years.
“Driving with wildlife awareness helps protect our native animals, reduces accidents, and eases the burden on wildlife rescuers,” NWC’s acting chair Sonja Elwood said.
“A little awareness goes a long way.”
