With demands on practices increasing daily and the expectations on veterinarians at an all-time high, the equipment that is used in surgery provides an important choice and opportunity to deliver best clinical outcomes for all patients.

DePuy Synthes (a Johnson & Johnson company) has long been seen as the R&D and innovative orthopaedic leader. Their new power tool UNIUM™, launched recently, is no exception. After considered development, the UNIUM™ offers Veterinarians solutions by meeting the demands required for cutting edge surgery.

Designed as a modular system, its compact and ergonomic shape allows for superb handling. Being 19% lighter than its predecessor Colibri II, it provides both comfort and balance, helping reduce operator fatigue and improving overall precision.

With efficiency in mind, the responsive triggers allow the surgeon to deliver with complete control. An 18% increase in power offers superior torque to speed ratio, meaning the UNIUM™ can be used for the most demanding of small animal orthopaedic procedures.

One development that has proved to be an absolute game changer is the advanced development of the long lasting lithium power unit. The power unit technology incorporates all electronic components, protecting the unit from steam exposure, often believed to be the Achilles heel of many other power tools.

To ensure optimal reliability the UNIUM™ has been engineered with a brushless motor and the reassurance of a battery level indicator visible during surgery.

While for some the investment in capital equipment may seem daunting initially, the return on investment achieved with a UNIUM™ system is backed by the reputation of a long standing international company. This is supported locally with the use of loaner tools provided when servicing is required, importantly avoiding any breaks in surgical procedures. All tools are registered internationally and serviced at a registered DePuy Synthes Service Centre.

For those veterinarians who currently own DePuy Synthes Power tools, the Colibri II attachments* are backward compatible with UNIUM™, making an upgrade to the new power tool even more appealing.

Veterinarians who have invested in the UNIUM™ convey enthusiastically that they have appreciated the time taken with both them and their team to understand the intricacies of the system and also the importance of reprocessing and care of their tools. Following best practice provides best outcomes.

The DePuy Synthes power tools are integrally supported by a complete suite of implants, cutting tools and instruments. As the TPLO plate was designed and patented by DePuy Synthes, they understand the need for best quality product for all patients.  All implants are Swiss made from forged premium stainless steel, allowing the surgeon to proceed with absolute confidence.

Already used across Australia by specialist animal hospitals, universities and GP practices alike, the DePuy Synthes UNIUM™ is holding up to the already earned reputation of The Gold Standard in the world of veterinary orthopaedics.
