Two out of three people in NSW and the ACT supported the NSW government’s ban on greyhound racing.
This is according to independent, anonymous polling conducted of 834 NSW and ACT residents between Friday 30 September and Wednesday 5 October 2016—before NSW Premier Mike Baird overturned the controversial ban some days later on 11 October, capitulating to pro-industry and political pressure.
The research commissioned by the RSPCA found 64 per cent of people in NSW and the ACT supported the ban on greyhound racing, while only 36 per cent opposed it.
Respondents’ political preferences resulted in little difference—66 per cent of Liberal and Coalition voters, 63 per cent of National Party voters and 61 per cent of Labor voters supported the ban, as well as 62 per cent of swinging voters.
Support for the ban was slightly stronger in metropolitan areas (77 per cent in the CBD; 67 per cent in suburban areas) but was still high in rural and regional areas (59 per cent) and non-capital cities (58 per cent).
“It’s worth noting these results come off the back of an intense and prolonged anti-ban media campaign—and yet, the findings are crystal clear,” said RSPCA Australia senior policy officer, Dr Jed Goodfellow, quoted in a press release issued (before the ban was reversed) to announce the poll’s findings.
Of the respondents who supported the government’s decision—almost 80 per cent cited animal welfare concerns as the reason for their position.
I did a private survey and 100% of people are against training young vets in universities using both dead and live greyhounds to train the vets of tomorrow. the same survey is also against australian vets draining the blood out of live greyhounds at your blood banks . you vets and your instructors are the biggest hypocrits i have ever heard of.
what a ridulous statistic to publish. Have you even done any fact checking instead of replicating the biased facts produced by, surprise surprise, an RSPCA funded survey. Please, so of the 834 people interviewed you draw the conclusion that the entire states is of the same thought?? 834 people represent nothing to use as basis for extrapolation. 2 out of 3 people…I don’t think so. Get your facts straight before publishing this in a magazine.
